WANTED A CAREER HELPING PEOPLE
Reid Matsushima began his career with Northwestern Mutual Financial Network by chance. "I was looking for a paid internship while I was in school. I was hoping to find a company who would train me properly and allow the opportunity to actually work with people... I had no idea who Northwestern Mutual was," he said. Reid applied for an internship with The Waltos Group in Newport Beach among several different financial services internships. As he went further into the interview process, the more he liked Northwestern Mutual's core values and proven track record. The idea of immediately building his own practice from the ground up alongside full-time representatives while getting investment and insurance licensed sealed the deal. It was only after Reid became an intern did he find out that The Northwestern Mutual Financial Network was named as having one of America's "Top 10 Internships" thirteen consecutive times since 1997 according to Vault Magazine 2009 (formerly the Princeton Review). EARLY STARTER BUILDS A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS
After graduating early from University of California, Irvine, Reid became a full-time Financial Representative. In his first year full-time with the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, Reid earned the Bronze and 75 Lives awards, which are given to representatives in their first year for successful business growth. Reid also received the company's acclaimed Pacesetter 1st 40 award for production in his first six months full-time. Reid moved his practice home to Hawaii in December 2005. In 2006, he earned the Silver and Ruby Awards, given to representatives in their second year for continued successful business growth. Reid also received the New Client award given for substantial new client growth, as well as the 75 Lives award again. Reid has enjoyed building his business which began as an intern. Reid has consistently had his best years ever in investment and insurance production every single year since he started in 2004. This growth is founded from Reid's passion to help people in needs based solutions and achieving financial security. EXPANDING HIS EXPERTISE
In 2008, Reid continued to work on completing several professional designations while also graduating from the L.E.A.D. program to become the College Unit Director for The Hawaii Group. The L.E.A.D. program is a leadership program designed to identify and develop individuals who are successful in their careers and who are motivated to help others succeed. The program is designed as a progressive curriculum. Financial representatives are invited into the program by their Managing Partner or Managing Director. Reid worked with The San Diego Group to build an internship program from the ground up in the Hawaii office. The college program has successfully converted four students full-time and was recognized for sending 3 students from UH-Manoa to Northwestern Mutual’s Winter Camp in 2010. To qualify, an intern had to be among the Top 100 in submitted business. In 2011, Northwestern Mutual had over 2,500 interns nationally.
In the Fall of 2009, Reid completed his Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU®) and the Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®) professional designations. He also became the Field Director with The Hawaii Group and is responsible for recruiting and developing new college and full-time representatives.
The Chartered Life Underwriter & Chartered Financial Consultant are prestigious courses of studies which provides professionals with in-depth knowledge on insurance needs for individuals, families, and business owners. A CLU & ChFC can provide expert advice on a broad range of financial topics including financial and estate planning, investments, pension and retirement planning, insurance law, life and health insurance, income taxation, and group benefits.
FUTURE VISION
Reid’s vision is by the end of 2012 to have a team of seven successful Financial Representatives while continuing to build his integrated financial planning practice. His goal is to become one of the top Financial Advisors in his field, locally and nationally. He is working towards building his own team within The Hawaii Group by recruiting individuals who are hard working, talented, and trustworthy. Ultimately Reid envisions The Hawaii Group as being the preeminent leader in Hawaii who provides quality internship and full-time career opportunities in the financial services industry for Hawaii-based students and professionals living abroad.
